Huntsbury Preschool, a community based, non-profit education provider is celebrating after receiving a glowing report from the Education Review Office.

The preschool is managed by parents and teachers and offers a unique education for 2-5 year olds.

Head teacher Sue McLeod says she's delighted at the report which gives hugely positive feedback to her and her team, and also to the parents who work hard supporting the preschool.

"We really do provide a very unique educational experience here and it's fantastic to be recognised publicly by ERO for this and to be given such incredibly positive feedback," she says.

The ERO report highlighted several areas where the teachers excelled.

  • The children experience a range of physical, creative and musical activities and are exposed to early literacy and numeracy experiences.

  • The children enter an interesting and stimulating environment that stimulates their curiosity for learning.

  • The interactions between teachers and parents, and teachers and children are hugely positive, sharing laughter and conversation. Children are happy and settled and parents feel welcome and comfortable.

  • Teachers know the children well and plan for experiences that capture their imagination. The teachers pitch their level of conversation so that the children' vocabulary and knowledge of words increases.

  • The children are socially competent and easily form friendships.

  • Children are hugely creative in their play, often about real life situations, for example two children organised a wedding, including invitations and planning the reception.

  • Teachers constantly place themselves at the child's level and use humour and expression to engage the children. They give the children time to share their ideas and build on their knowledge.

  • Children's ideas and emerging interests are responded to within a flexible and positive learning environment.

Parents whose children attend the preschool were also thrilled the teachers have been given such a huge thumbs up from ERO.

Kerry Watson says she has always known the Preschool's greatest asset was the teachers and ERO has confirmed this.

"Huntsbury Preschool is this side of towns best kept secret. My children love it and it really is a very special place."

To celebrate the ERO report the Preschool is holding a special morning tea on Wednesday July 1st at 10.30 am in the Huntsbury Community Centre on Huntsbury Ave.
